SPORT In English the word ‘sport’ describes both casual play and the highest levels of performance. Recent surveys reveal that 10% of adults play sports more than twice a week, the majority of the British population involves in sport or physical recreation at least once a month. Most people have an interest in some sports as a player, spectator or gambler, but everybody in Britain seems to be fond of outdoor exercise, be it jogging, walking, rambling or just sitting on the bench outdoors. As British homes are rather cool in winter (at least for Estonians!), the saying goes that ‘the English like fresh air outdoors and indoors’. It has borders with two countries ­ Mexico and Canada. There are also the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico surrounding the big country. There are 50 states in America. Most of the people live in towns. The biggest state is Alaska; next by size are California, Alaska and Montana. Six states - Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are called New England. They are all small states in the USA that lie in the north- east. The first colony of immigrants settled down in Virginia, in the eastern part of the USA. 3. Relief The USA is situated in the central part of the North American continent. Its western coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and in the south its coast is washed by the Gulf of Mexico. The coastline is even. Fans adored his smiling face and his determination to succeed. During his playing career, Michael Jordan became the most famous athlete in the world. EARLY LIFE Michael Jordan was born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York. His family later moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. Young Michael’s best sport was baseball. He didn’t make his high school basketball team as a sophomore. Later, he played well enough to be noticed by Coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina (UNC). Jordan won a scholarship to UNC. As a freshman at UNC, Jordan scored the winning basket in the 1982 national college tournament championship game. He played two more seasons at UNC. He also played for the United States team in the 1984 Olympic Games. In 1984, Jordan entered the NBA player draft

Pierre de Frédy, was a French pedagogue and historian, but is best known as the founder of the modern Olympic Games. He was born in Paris into a French aristocratic family. As a young man he was an avid sportsman with rowing being one of his favourites, also practicing the sports of boxing, fencing and horse-riding. Influenced by the social, political and scientific events of the late 19th century and his substantial education, Coubertin developed a passionate belief that sport possessed a power to benefit humankind and encourage peace among the nations of the world. He refused the military career planned for him by his family, as well as renouncing a promising political career. De Coubertin was inspired by his visits to British and American colleges and universities, and set out to improve education. He thought part of this improvement should be sports education, which he considered an important part of the personal development of young people.
